IIT Dhanbad Hostels

IIT Dhanbad has 11 hostels each named after a gem, rightly suited for the institute. Of the 11 hostels, 6 are boys’ hostels and 3 are for girls. Also, 2 hostels are reserved for international students.

Many hostel buildings are as old as 96 years. But this only adds to the picturesque view of the campus. The hostels are well equipped with all the basic facilities. 

There is a common room, mess, canteen, juice center, indoor games room, stationery shop, and also laundry facilities in each hostel. The rooms are allotted on a twin-sharing basis.

As for the allotment of rooms, there are no restrictions on the basis of the study course or year of study. Students reside in a mixed manner. 

Alike all other IIT campuses, at IIT Dhanbad also each hostel is managed by a Warden assisted by the Hostel Council. The Hostel Council comprises of secretaries looking after different arena of the hostels.

Mess Food At IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

Every hostel at IIT Dhanbad has a separate mess that is managed by a mess committee headed by the Mess Secretary. Tenders are issued annually to private caterers for all the messes.

Hence, the quality and taste of the food at every hostel vary. If the students are not satisfied with the food quality or want a change in the menu, they complain to the mess committee.

Then the Mess Secretary after proper consultation from the residing students makes required amendments. These changes in the menu need to be followed by the caterers. 

Mess timings
a. Breakfast: 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM
b. Lunch: 12:00 Noon to 2:30 PM
c. Snacks: 5:00 PM to 6.30 PM
d. Dinner: 8:00PM to 10:00 PM

As for the mess food of IIT Dhanbad, on the whole, is of average quality that the students make do with. Occasionally, they prefer to eat outside to replenish their tastebuds.

IIT Dhanbad is also a campus where non-vegetarian food is easily available in the hostel messes. Though, if you take the non-veg food then you cannot take the veg plate for that meal.

Also, thrice every semester special menu is cooked for the inmates complete with desserts and delicious dishes. The days are decided in consultation with the mess committee.

The Mess Chart of IIT Dhanbad hostels is identical to any other hostel mess. Food is served four times a day at specified times, Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner.

  1. Toasted Bread, butter, jam, and milk (200ml) with cornflakes are served for breakfast on all days of the week. 
  2. Salad and pickles are served in unlimited quantities during lunch and dinner every day. 
  3. Tomato Sauce is be served only on demand during breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. 
  4. Vegetable dishes to be decided in consultation with mess committee members.
  5. All food items are served in unlimited quantities unless otherwise specified. 
  6. Patients’ diet is provided to sick students in their respective hostel rooms when requested.
  7. Curd and milk are served to the inmates of the hostel only on a payment basis.

Other Food Options At IIT Dhanbad

Getting bored by the same hostel food daily over and over is quite common. Hence, there has to be a way out.

Technically, there are not many food joints or eateries on the campus except for a few. However, the campus is surrounded by many frolic joints on all sides.

  4. Subway Food Canteen 

There might not be many options inside the campus boundaries but it hardly takes 5 minutes to reach the best ones. Also, you can always order food online.
